Photos on the Web II

This is the second post dedicated to great photos found on the web of people wearing disco pants. These photos will be of guys wearing disco pants. Consequently, this will be a very short post as guys wearing disco pants and uploading photos of themselves wearing such is a rare phenomenon in these modern times. I will include photos here of guys wearing them back in the 70’s and 80’s as well. Otherwise this would be an extremely short post.

And of course, Menudo

That’s about it. About 6 or 7 of these photos are current. The rest are all vintage. Black seems to be the common color in guys’ choice of disco pants. A couple of the guys above have photos of them in various other colors of disco pants. Leif Garrett was known to have worn mostly black but also red and navy blue. Shaun Cassidy wore black, red and white. Menudo wore all the colors. But in terms of the American Apparel ones, black seems to be the only choice worn by the today’s dudes.

Well that’s all I have. But this post turned out to be longer than I thought it would. If anyone wishes to contribute photos that would be great. I would especially love to see vintage photos of anyone who played in a garage or local band during the late 70’s or early 80’s and wore disco pants.

That singer in Black Oak Arkansas is “Jim Dandy”. He was pretty much the first rocker to sport spandex pants, going as far back as 1973! He only wore white ones, and never with underwear. He never wore underwear either. His pants were a little different than traditional spandex disco pants though, while they did have a zipper and belt loops, his didn’t have back pockets. David Lee Roth from Van Halen even credited Jim Dandy as his inspiration for his whole spandex look throughout the 80’s as well as his singing style. Here’s a link showing Jim Dandy from the back (no pockets)

      Hi Tom,
I suspected that his weren’t truly disco pants, as BOA’s heyday was a bit before the advent of actual disco pants. I guess I should have included a photo of Roth instead. Thanks for commenting!

Interesting pics. I like the pics of the rockers. The disco pants work very well with the style of dress and the overall rocker attitude and motif. They remind me of Iron Maiden’s “Run To The Hills,” the lead singer from the group Saxon, and the Scorpions, to name a few. You even included Steve Perry and Journey. Excellent. The guys with the rock and roll t-shirts remind me of, well, me, since that is usually how I wear them. Also, I wonder how a rocker would look in American Apparel’s abstract print disco pants, such as the cheetah print or the blue with white randomly placed polka dots. Maybe even the tiger striped LeGambi’s that turn up on eBay once in a while, or something similar. Do you think they or any guy could pull off the look? Just curious what you think.

      Hi Russ,
I should have written a little more about the photos. Didn’t think about it at the time but now that you mentioned certain things the thought came to mind. It seems like there are 3 basic categories of these photos:
      1. the famous rockers of the 70’s & 80’s
      2. the rock revivalists (the guys wearing rock tees) who are probably just big fans
      3. the modern day metrosexuals
I fall into category #2 myself. Some of the guys in category 3 use their disco pants in outfits that look a bit too flamboyant or borderline feminine. I’d like to see them wearing disco pants in a more casual, everyday style as women do. But whatever.

As far as the print disco pants, I’ve never been a fan of those myself. I prefer solid colors. But I would applaud any guy who wears them. I think they immediately give the impression of ‘metalhead’ though. Personally, I think solid color disco pants already attract plenty of attention. The print ones would multiply that several times over. But whatever helps disco pants in general gain acceptance for men, I’m all for!
