Barbara Rhoades in Disco Pants on ‘Magnum P.I.” (1982)

A reader of this blog sent me some photos of Barbara Rhoades from a 1982 episode of Magnum P.I. In this episode she wears both gold and snakeskin print spandex disco pants. And of course, she plays an unsavory character. Just further evidence that Hollywood was trying to make the disco pant a preferred piece of the scheming, bad and/or empty-headed sexpot. Thank goodness Charlie’s Angels served as a counterbalance to them! Anyway, 1982 was still the height of disco pants so no surprise they would be seen in a Magnum P.I. episode. In fact, I’d be surprised if there weren’t any more episodes of this show where disco pants could be found.

As I am not a fan of snakeskin or tiger-print or zebra-print or any print for that matter, I am only going to post the solid gold color disco pants she wore on this episode. She was about 35 or 36 here so it’s good to see that a slightly older female was still wearing such pants even if her character was questionable. You’ll note that while her pants are the tightest-fitting disco pants ever, even looser-fitting spandex has a way of grabbing onto you and still giving the impression of being a second-skin.

The pants look really great here. I was told it’s a gold color but at least in the photos it looks more like champagne or something like that. That is a color I don’t have and would like to add to my collection. Gold can be a bit loud as it’s not a color of pants that either gender wears frequently. This one seems to be softer and in between gold and silver. I’ve seen some in this color on ebay or elsewhere but either they were too small or I just couldn’t afford them.

Also, I can’t tell what brand they are. She does a pretty good job of keep that part covered up, but most likely they are Le Gambi or Bojeangles.

The reader sent me some video clips of this episode as well but I cannot share them here. Thanks to him for sharing all the photos and clips!

This is a great disco pants episode from the late 70′ early 80’s era. I do remember Barbara Rhoades the actress in lots of stuff years ago. Also, I must tell you that I have a friend today who dresses just like her character in this episode. This girl is slightly older and wears gold disco pants and fun hats all the time, although, this girl was never a showgirl or tried to murder her husband, LOL!!!

That is really good to know that there are real-life good people wearing disco pants! My motto is decide what you like to wear and find a way to wear it all the time.
      Thanks for commenting!

They are probably just the usual Legambi or Bojeangles disco pants of the era. Just the outdoor lighting and the fact that it was filmed in 1981 or so. There’s probably better video/film equipment today.

      • Spandex Disco Jeans says:

Yeah, it looks really good though.

The only thing really missing from this episode was a good arrest scene for Marcella (Barbara Rhoades). We only know from Magnum’s voice over that she went to jail. It would have been awesome to see her try to get away in her high heels and tight gold disco jeans but get caught and arrested. The final scene could have been her being walked away in handcuffs and hot shiny pants.

That would have been funny seeing her try to get away in high heels! Perfect way to end a show though–walking away in tight shiny pants.

They sure looked gold colored to me. I suppose they could be champagne color, or maybe even taupe shaded as well. They sure look different in various levels of light. They seemed gold when she was outdoors to me. Whatever the color, she looked great in them, and they looked great on her. I think they are LeGambis. The lettering on the triangle shaped tag look like LeGambis that I/we have. Too bad there were no closeups to confirm it (woooo).

Taupe! That’s the color I was looking for. You saw the episode yourself so I trust your judgment. Either way it is a great color. I want to pick up some of these shows on dvd especially with having the knowledge of what season and episode they are. Thanks for the pics!!

Good to see that someone like Barbara was wearing SDJ while in her mid 30’s. SDJ are not just for the younger crowd, no sir, because I started wearing SDJ when I was 19 and I’m 58 now. I have over 40 pairs both vintage and newer. I wear them to many public places including to my workplace. Sure I get some stares, and some have made comments. But I wear them for me.

    • Spandex Disco Jeans says:

      Hi Ray,
Agreed that sdj’s are not only for the younger crowd. Age 58 is still the prime of life! Sounds like you have a pretty great collection. Ultimately, whatever we wear has to be for ourselves if we wish to be true to ourselves. What sort of interesting workplace do you wear them to?

  4. Ray says:

I work at a hotel downtown. I wear my SDJ everyday there. Some people labeled me “Mr. Disco” lol.

    • Spandex Disco Jeans says:

      Hey Skippy,
I know Bonnie from Delaney & Bonnie. Interesting that they would make this video of The Allman Bros. in black & white. Makes me wonder what color her pants are. Great fit on her! Thanks for the video.

Btw I was able to find that Magnum P.I episode on Dailymotion one of the only websites left to have Television episodes.

    • skippy says:

Older Tv show episodes that is.

    • Spandex Disco Jeans says:

I’ll have to check that out. Might even be worth picking up that season of the show.

      • Russ says:

If you subscribe to Starz you can view the episode on demand. They have Magnum, P.I., The A-Team and other classic TV shows available for viewing on demand. That’s how I saw this episode.

      • Spandex Disco Jeans says:

That’s good to know. Thanks. Speaking of A-Team, do you know of any episodes with disco jeans in them?

  7. Russ says:

Hey SDJ. This episode of Magnum PI was just on Starz this past week, Thursday I think, maybe Wednesday. I only caught the end of it though. I checked Starz On Demand and it wasn’t posted at all this time. We have to wait until it gets posted again to watch it from their channel. Then maybe better pics and video can be had.

I don’t know of any A-Team episodes with SDJs in them. Sorry. See ya!
